Quail

While we hope to raise chickens one day, having chickens in an urban setting comes with challenges such as obtaining permits and possible noise complaints. Quail are an excellent alternative! Keep reading to learn more about raising these lovely birds!

Our First Birds

In the summer of 2023 we decided that we were ready to expand our homestead and began raising quail. We were lucky enough to make a local trade with another homesteader for our first quail.

Home Sweet Home

While we planned to let our quail ground raise for the most part, it was important that the birds also had an enclosure to keep them safe. Before we received our birds we prepared by setting up their enclosure.

Little Blessings

We chose to raise quail for both their meat and eggs. Quail, like rabbits are prolific producers with a short turn around time between birth and butcher. By raising quail we are able to provide ethically and sustainably raised meat and eggs for our growing family ensuring our son receives the best nutrition possible. Raising quail for meat and eggs also reduces our monthly grocery costs while still giving us access to high-quality products that we may not have been able to otherwise afford.

Hatching New Generations

Because we are raising our quail for meat it is important that we continue to hatch new generations of quail. We have spent the summer learning incubation and hatching techniques to ensure we are consistently producing healthy chicks. We look forward to sharing everything we have learned in upcoming blogs.
